Working with Adults with New ADHD Diagnoses with Meg Duke (Clinical Skills Summit: Ethical Healing Innovations - MODULE 10)

CE Hours 1.5

About this course

This continuing education unit focuses on navigating an adult diagnosis of ADHD with clients, emphasizing its clinical relevance and evidence-based approaches. ADHD in adulthood is increasingly recognized, often after individuals reflect on childhood traits previously misattributed to personality or other conditions. Many adults have learned to mask their symptoms and develop coping mechanisms, only to struggle with the cumulative impact of undiagnosed ADHD on their mental health, relationships, and careers. As a result, a growing number of individuals are seeking professional support to understand and manage their symptoms.

Learning Objectives

  • Demonstrate the ability to recognize core ADHD symptoms in adults, including emotional dysregulation, executive functioning challenges, and masking behaviors, by applying diagnostic criteria and distinguishing ADHD from other co-occurring mental health conditions.
  • Articulate at least three actionable strategies, such as the 5-Minute Rule, the Pomodoro Technique, and the Eisenhower Matrix, to improve clients’ focus, time management, and emotional regulation, tailored to individual client needs.
  • Identify at least two methods to help clients reframe negative self-perceptions and challenge internalized stigma about ADHD, using strengths-based language and psychoeducation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of validated tools like the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) and daily mood trackers, using them to track symptoms, set measurable goals, and guide treatment planning.
