Facilitating Client Growth For Therapists in Solution Focused Work (CM 6)

CE Hours 6

About this course

Real change happens between sessions — when the work that surfaces in the room becomes thinking, reflection, and action that the client carries into their week. This course offers practitioners practical tools for facilitating that growth in solution-focused work, including how to partner with clients in designing specific and meaningful action steps, how to support client-driven accountability rather than therapist-driven compliance, and how to consolidate learning at session's end so it can travel forward. Drawing on recent meta-analyses of solution-focused brief therapy, between-session homework research, and the psychology of implementation intentions, the course addresses common challenges including incomplete actions, unexpected results, and goals that the client cannot fully control. Participants will leave with a practical framework and clinical language they can apply immediately in their next session.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the three dimensions of post-session work in solution-focused practice — thinking, reflection, and action — and identify the clinical purpose of each.
  • Apply the principle of client-designed actions and accountability, including how to support a client in defining specific, accessible, and meaningful between-session steps.
  • Demonstrate the use of evocative questioning to help clients refine vague intentions ("I'll be more positive") into concrete, workable actions tied to their goals.
  • Differentiate between practitioner-driven accountability (which can recreate compliance patterns) and client-driven accountability (which supports autonomy and sustainable change).
  • Analyze scenarios involving incomplete actions, unexpected results, and goals outside the client's direct control — and identify clinical strategies that preserve forward momentum without shame, judgment, or scope creep.
