Evoking Client Awareness For Therapists in Solution Focused Work (CM 2)

CE Hours 6

About this course

Evocative questioning is one of the most powerful tools in solution-focused work — when done well, it helps clients arrive at their own clarity rather than depending on the therapist's interpretation. This course offers therapists practical skills for asking questions that genuinely evoke client awareness, including how to inquire about the client's current thinking, feeling, values, needs, and wants without leading them toward a predetermined answer. Drawing on research from motivational interviewing, solution-focused brief therapy, and the psychology of insight, the course also addresses the difference between evocative questioning and the more interpretive questioning common in depth-oriented therapy. Participants will leave with a working framework for question architecture and clinical language they can apply immediately in their next session.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the core components of evocative questioning in solution-focused practice, including questions about the client's current thinking, feeling, values, needs, wants, beliefs, and behaviors.
  • Differentiate evocative questioning from leading questions and from interpretive depth-therapy work, identifying the clinical purpose of each.
  • Apply the architecture of a "good question" — purposeful, customized to the client, and inviting exploration beyond current thinking — within solution-focused therapeutic conversations.
  • Demonstrate the use of silence, pause, metaphor, and analogy as therapeutic tools that create space for the client to arrive at their own awareness.
  • Analyze common pitfalls in evocative questioning, including the tendency to lead clients toward the therapist's hypothesis, and identify clinical strategies for preserving client autonomy.
