Doubting Dissociation: From Repressed Memories to TikTok Teens by Whit Davison (Clinical Skills Summit: Ethical Healing Innovations - MODULE 8)

CE Hours 1.5

About this course

Although Pierre Janet coined the term “dissociation” in the late 19th century, identifying dissociative symptoms and diagnosing dissociative disorders remains controversial. This presentation will take participants through the complicated history of dissociation, from its identification and near-abandonment by early psychologists, through sensationalized portrayals in movies and books, into the challenges of the “repressed memory” movement in the 1990’s, and arriving at today’s dismissal of the disorder as “diagnosis by TikTok.” Once we understand the history of the concept of dissociation, we will look critically at the established narratives surrounding it: that it is a form of daydreaming, that people are faking it for attention, and that it is rare and untreatable. Finally, we will look at screening tools, assessment questions, and other methods for clinicians to separate real dissociation from possible imitation.

Learning Objectives

  • 1. Identify three points in history when the concept of dissociation was challenged or dismissed.
  • 2. Explain how the history of the concept of dissociation impacts current practices in assessment and diagnosis.
  • 3. List three assessments which can be used to assist with diagnosing dissociation.
  • 4. Apply presentation content to included case studies.

Course Instructor(s)

  • Whit Davison, LCSW

Whit Davison is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Kansas City, Missouri. Whit became a mental health therapist to provide care to clients with challenging diagnoses, including complex trauma, borderline personality disorder, persistent suicidality, and anger management. She realized that understanding dissociation can play an important part in working with these clients as well as with clients diagnosed with “traditional” dissociative diagnoses like dissociative identity disorder and depersonalization and derealization. She has specialized in dissociation since 2020, working with clients whose dissociative experiences range from comparatively mild to incapacitating. Whit is a member of the International Society for the Study of Trauma of Dissociation (ISST-D), offers peer consults for colleagues with questions about dissociation, and is developing a series of approved continuing education courses to help clinicians work with these sometimes mystifying disorders.
