Dissociation or Borderline Personality Disorder: How to Tell, and How to Help by Whit Davidson (Clinical Skills Summit: Ethical Healing Innovations - MODULE 9)

CE Hours 1

About this course

The average time to diagnosis for a dissociative disorder is almost seven years, and many clients are given a borderline personality disorder (BPD) diagnosis somewhere along the way. Hallmark symptoms of BPD can also be present in dissociative disorders, including a history of trauma, a shifting or absent sense of self, impulsive and/or self-destructive behaviors, self-harm, mood swings, chronic emptiness…the overlap is extensive. This presentation will start by examining current definitions and diagnostic criteria for BPD and dissociative disorders. We will look at where they overlap, and then we will move into understanding how the differences between the two are the key to accurate diagnosis and treatment. We will discuss how the idea of complex post-traumatic stress disorder may be useful in case conceptualization for some of the “middle ground” cases, even if it is not currently a DSM-V recognized diagnosis. We will work through two client scenarios for real-world practice on this challenging diagnostic issue.

Learning Objectives

  • List at least three key differences between borderline personality disorder and dissociative disorders.
  • Explain how symptoms common to both borderline personality disorder and dissociative disorders signify different internal processes.
  • Utilize knowledge gained in presentation to work through case scenarios.

Course Instructor(s)

  • Whit Davison, LCSW

Whit Davison is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Kansas City, Missouri. Whit became a mental health therapist to provide care to clients with challenging diagnoses, including complex trauma, borderline personality disorder, persistent suicidality, and anger management. She realized that understanding dissociation can play an important part in working with these clients as well as with clients diagnosed with “traditional” dissociative diagnoses like dissociative identity disorder and depersonalization and derealization. She has specialized in dissociation since 2020, working with clients whose dissociative experiences range from comparatively mild to incapacitating. Whit is a member of the International Society for the Study of Trauma of Dissociation (ISST-D), offers peer consults for colleagues with questions about dissociation, and is developing a series of approved continuing education courses to help clinicians work with these sometimes mystifying disorders.
