Active Listening in Solution-Focused Practice: Noticing, Acknowledging, and Reflecting (CM 1)

CE Hours 6

About this course

Active listening is one of the most foundational clinical skills — and one of the easiest to take for granted once we have years of practice behind us. This course offers practitioners a deliberate return to the skill, drawing on contemporary research showing that listening quality directly predicts working alliance and client well-being. Participants will examine the six core listening skills practiced together (noticing, acknowledging, summarizing, reflecting, ensuring clarity, ensuring understanding), the difference between acknowledgment and praise, the practice of customizing questions to the client's own language, and the common pitfalls that quietly compromise listening — including listening with an agenda, jumping to interpretation, and falling back on habitual questioning. The course is grounded in solution-focused practice and is especially relevant for clinically trained practitioners whose interpretive instincts may need recalibration when working in a forward-focused frame.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe active listening as a multi-dimensional clinical skill that involves attending to the client's verbal content, tone, body language, energy shifts, trends, and what is left unsaid.
  • Differentiate between acknowledgment and praise, and identify the clinical purpose of each in solution-focused practice.
  • Apply the six core listening skills — noticing, acknowledging, summarizing, reflecting, ensuring clarity, and ensuring understanding — within solution-focused therapeutic conversations.
  • Demonstrate the practice of customizing questions to the client by attending to and using the client's own language, metaphors, and meaning-making.
  • Analyze common pitfalls that compromise active listening — including listening with an agenda, premature interpretation, and habitual questioning — and identify clinical strategies for preserving the client's voice.
